‘Clayface’ Film Undergoes Rewrites

Warner Bros. tapped a new screenwriter to rewrite Mike Flanagan’s Clayface script.

Screenwriter Hossein Amini will rewrite Clayface for DC Studios. Amini best known for writing 2011’s Drive. His writing on the 1997 movie The Wings of the Dove was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. More recently, Amini wrote for the Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars series for Disney+.

There is zero word on the specifics of what Amini is rewriting and the reasoning behind the rewrites. However, it’s worth noting that it is normal for Hollywood to bring in other screenwriters or script doctor to rewrite or tweak screenplays. Despite what some circles of the internet claim, this does not mean that Clayface will have a complete tonal shift or lose its horror movie vibes.

‘Clayface’ Will Likely Continue Its Horror Tone

The horror tone was something that Dr. Sleep director Mike Flanagan originally conceived when pitching Clayface to Warner Bros. Way back in 2021, Flanagan reported on Twitter that the movie is a straight horror film. His exact quote was that he saw the “Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.”

More recently, Speak No Evil director James Watkins will helm the film. In addition to Speak No Evil, Watkins also made other horror projects, like Eden Lake, The Woman in Black, and an episode of Black Mirror. So with that in mind, it seems like the movie will stick to the original horror premise. Production will start on the movie in October in the U.K.

Clayface will hit theaters on September 11, 2026.
