Max Unleashes ‘The Penguin’ Series Trailer

Max has revealed the first story trailer for the original The Penguin series.

The show stars Colin Farrell in the titular role and the new clip shows him monologuing over a montage of violent gang battles.  It appears that the Penguin’s speech is a subtle thesis of what his motives are for the entire series.

“When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old-school type, Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal. If he saw you on the street, he’d call out to you. When I’m 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies. Still holding a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor. A friggin’ parade! It wasn’t fancy, but it was the gesture. The show of love of what he meant. Can you imagine, to be remembered like that?

The primary thing that seems to drive Cobblepot to commit all his violent crimes stems from getting self-respect and notoriety. This was a character seed that was planted in his introduction in The Batman. In the film, Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot was a bit of a lackey under Falcone. However, it was clear that he was ambitious and hoping for more. Now that Falcone’s dead, it seems like Cobblepot is ready to take Gotham City’s underworld in a bloody gang war.

‘The Penguin’ Will Be ‘Dark’

In related news, Farrell reported that the series has finished production.

“We wrapped it, man. We did it. Stuck a fork in it about two weeks ago. It was a long and really wonderful experience. And it’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark, and really heavy, I think, certainly it was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun. I had an amazing time… but it’s incredibly violent.”

Farrell also promised a very dark series that shows The Penguin’s rise to power.

“It’s one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or social status, and, you know, the death of Carmine Falcone at the end of [The Batman] leaves this vacuum in Gotham to be filled, and so there are various people that are grabbing for that power, and this is Oswald’s journey trying to rise to the top through extraordinary obstacles. And it’s super dark. [Series creator] Lauren LeFranc wrote an incredibly twisted eight hours of television.”

The Penguin series will hit the Max streaming service in the Fall of 2024.
