It may just be a city, but it’s one that has lots of dark secrets. Now, Batman’s hometown will be getting a new origin story, Gotham City: Year One.

Announced during the DC Tom Taylor & Tom King in Conversation panel at the San Diego Comic-Con recently,  this new series will feature Tom King, Phil Hester, Eric Gapstur, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles working together.

Due to release this October, this new series is set decades before Bruce Wayne ever donned the cowl and prowled the rooftops. Following Slam Bradley, an investigator who gets too involved with a missing child case. Eventually his investigation takes him to the Wayne family.

King said during the panel that this story will finally tell us:

What turned Gotham City from a ‘normal city’ into the hellhole we know today.

He continued:

Having written a ton of Batman comics, I can say it’s incredibly rare to write book like this, where you can add something large and essential to the mythos of the Dark Knight, as Scott did with Court of Owls or Grant did with the introduction of Damian or Frank did with, well, everything he touched.

In Gotham City: Year One, Phil and I will take you to a noir-drenched past, where the secrets that made Gotham become Gotham, the sins that made Batman become Batman are finally and violently revealed.

Phil Hester added:

Night falls quickly in Gotham City. The shadows cut across guilty and innocent alike. I feel lucky to be the artist to show you just how this city got so dark in the first place…Tom has crafted a story that will echo across Batman lore past and present, and I hope the storytelling techniques Eric, Jordie, Clayton and I are bringing to bear will augment his razor-keen approach.

I’m honored to play a small part in bringing Siegel and Shuster’s landmark creation to a new audience, and in giving one of DC’s oldest legends the white-hot spotlight he deserves.

This is not the first “Year One” series that DC has released; characters such as Batman, Green Arrow, Huntress, The Flash, and many others have all received their own origin series. This is, however, the first time a City has earned the title. It’s not the first time that Gotham’s gruesome history has been delved into, but we’re looking forward to seeing what’s been changed for it to become what we all know it as.

Gotham City: Year One will be a six-issue miniseries. The first issue is set for release on October 4, also featuring variant cover art by Ryan Sook and David Marquez.
