Barry Keoghan May Have a Surprise Villain Role in ‘The Batman’

An unlikely source has leaked that actor Barry Keoghan may be a surprise villain in the upcoming The Batman.

Initially, Keoghan was announced as being cast in The Batman to play Officer Stanley Merkel, Jim Gordon’s partner. While a more obscure character, Merkel is a pre-existing one from the comics. He originally debuted in Frank Miller’s Batman Year One. He was then retroactively inserted into earlier Batman stories as a beat cop who eventually met his demise at the hands of Sofia Falcone in Dark Victory.

Given that Keoghan is also Irish, him playing an Irish character makes sense. However, there was a leak from a random source indicating Keoghan will be playing a much more famous role.

According to Keoghan’s brother Eric, Barry will be playing the Joker.

In what appeared to be a tweet, Keoghan’s brother revealed that the actor is actually the Joker in The Batman.

So it’s finally out My Brother playing the JOKER in the new Batman Unreal Stuff

Except it is not out that the actor is playing the Joker, making Eric Keoghan the one who broke the alleged news. The tweet has since been deleted.

Is Barry Keoghan the Next Joker?

Of course, the actor’s brother is hardly a reliable source of information. However, it would be interesting to see if this rumor is true.

If that is indeed the case, then Barry Keoghan will join the ranks of Paul Dano’s Riddler, Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman, and Colin Farrell’s Penguin. That’s already a ton of villains in one movie! Only time will tell if this is the case or not.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4th, 2022.
