Famed curmudgeon, Detective Harvey Bullock, will appear in Batman ’89. His appearance was revealed by artist Joe Quinones on Twitter.
The old arm of the law
Detective Bullock has played a part in many Batman stories over the years, often used as a stand-in for all the rough, slovenly, mildly corrupt but ultimately good-hearted officers that comprise the Gotham City Police Department. This will mark his debut in the Burtonverse of Batman ’89, a series set in the immediate aftermath of, and in the same world as, Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. Written by Sam Hamm and illustrated by Quinones, the series will explore the dark, twisted vision of Gotham City originally brought to life on the big screen in 1989.
Here’s the original pitch:
Step back into the Gotham of Tim Burton’s seminal classic Batman movies! Batman ’89 brings in screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) and artist Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero) to pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director.
Gotham becomes torn in two as citizens dressed as Batman and The Joker duke it out in the streets. As D.A. Harvey Dent tries to keep the city together, he targets the one problem tearing it apart: BATMAN! And he’ll get Bruce Wayne’s help in taking down the Dark Knight!

One more thing
There’s no word yet in which issue Harvey Bullock will debut in Batman ’89. The series begins its run on August 10, and will no doubt catch up with major characters like Batman and Catwoman, before introducing the donut-hunting detective Bullock.
Harvey is certainly one of the more colorful members of the Batman cast, and any universe would be a better place with him playing a supporting role.
What does everyone out there think? Are you excited to see Harvey in this universe? Who do you think should have played him on-screen? Please let us know your thoughts.
