For some time we have heard about “The Snyder Cut” of Justice League, and now writer/director David Ayer wants a release of his cut for his 2016 Suicide Squad too. Will we soon be seeing the Ayer Cut?
Ayer’s Twitter remarks:
My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen.
Cutting Room Floor
When Ayer’s Suicide Squad went through extensive re-shoots according to Deadline, and the writer/director has mentioned various times that there were numerous deleted scenes to the 2016 film. For a start, we’ll be seeing a lot more Joker and a lot less strange dark magic from the Enchantress and family.
Rinse, Wash, Repeat…
Warner Bros. has a history of releasing director’s cut editions of its DC superhero films, going back to the 2006 release of Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, and the upcoming release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
A sequel (of sorts) to Ayer’s Suicide Squad by writer/director James Gunn is currently in post-production for an August 6, 2021 release.
Is This Going to be a Trend?
Given that the “Snyder Cut” has been funded 20 million dollars for a “redo”, is this going to be a Hollywood trend that if the movie doesn’t produce in the box office, do the studios simply need to re-cut every film that isn’t deemed “successful”?
