For the vast majority of fans, the appointment of James Gunn as the director of The Suicide Squad was well received. Lauded for his work with Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy franchise, Gunn should bring a great deal of verve and creativity to the film.Though it was initially rumored to be a complete reboot of the franchise, casting news seems to contradict this.
Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney are all on board to reprise their roles from David Ayer’s 2016 film. Also joining the cast is Idris Elba, in a yet to be confirmed role. Also heavily rumored for the film is WWE superstar John Cena, most likely as Peacemaker. This would imply that the film is more of a soft reboot than anything, with several returning characters alongside some new ones.
Set for release in 2021, the film has started pre-production. Testament to this is the image below, released by Gunn via Instagram. An intriguing sketch featuring an unspecified character as part of the storyboarding process. Speculation is rife regarding the character’s identity. Could it be Clayface, or a returning Killer Croc? Or King Shark? Or somebody else entirely? The possibilities are endless.
Who do you think this could be? Feel free to leave comments below with your thoughts on this and anything else to do with the film.
The Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 6th, 2021.
