Season 3, Episode 12 of ‘Gotham’ Teases the Return of Jerome

This January – he will return!

Minor spoiler warning for Gotham Season 3!

After the most recent fall finale for Gotham, FOX released a short teaser for what’s to come, and it just so happens that this little clip focuses heavily on the return of Jerome Valeska (played by Cameron Monaghan). Check out the clip below!

In case you are behind on Gotham and missed the spoiler warning above, here is another one. Spoiler warning.

Back in episode 3 of Season 2 (entitled “The Last Laugh”) we witness Jerome’s apparent death at the hands of Theo Galavan (played by James Frain) after he stabs him in the neck on live television. So how is Jerome going to come back? The short answer is he’s not – not this season at least. Speaking on this at a summer TV press tour panel, executive producer John Stevens said:

You’ll have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back like in the days of John the Baptist. Setting the stage that if there is a Season 4, hopefully we’ll bring that back in a much bigger way and you’ll see these different versions of the Joker myth. He plays into the idea of transformation. When he comes back, you want to see that new version – that next step forward.

Many fans see this resurrection as a chance for Jerome to come back as The Joker, and the show hasn’t been very subtle in terms of its imagery and characterization when it comes to Jerome, however the actor Cameron Monaghan had this to say about his “death”:

I think he’s the Joker in that he represents the idea, the greater concept. And somewhere, some kid or some person watched [his videos/the news coverage] and it burrowed into their mind, and one day it will snap and take them over. The idea of this person will possess someone completely new. So, I love that idea — something about it really is chilling and excited me when I read the episode.

So if you’re excitedly awaiting Jerome’s return, it is going to be a long wait, but that’s assuming the series gets picked up for a fourth season and the show has a chance to set the stage for his fantastic resurrection.

Gotham will return to FOX with all new episodes starting this January.
