The Batman actor Robert Pattinson made comments on how it seems unlikely his version of Batman will be integrated into the DCU universe.
During a press conference to promote his latest movie Primetime, Pattinson stated how the tone of The Batman films and shows are so specific and idiosyncratic. This dark tone and mood makes it hard to see the character cross into a brighter, more fantastical tone of James Gunn’s Superman or The Suicide Squad.
“I think it would be kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of that world. It’s one of the only characters, I guess because of the length of the shoots but also it’s such a specific kind of [style], the tone of it gets inside you. I remember that happened to me the last time I did it, it took a while. You’re just in the dark, the whole time. Both mood-wise and light-wise, I can’t see anything for like months. It does affect you; like you feel strange afterwards.”
To be fair, Gunn’s DCU franchise of movies and television shows also have a wide range of tones. While Superman is very colorful sci fi aesthetic, Supergirl was very gritty, sci fi. And to go even further on the DCU tone spectrum, the latest Lanterns show is even more grounded and gritty despite featuring the fantastical powers of the Green Lantern. It is unclear if Pattinson is aware of how dramatically the tones of the DCU franchise can vacillate.
Robert Pattinson on How “Ambitious’ ‘Part II’ Will Be
In other interviews Robert Pattinson really expressed his excitement for The Batman Part II. He teased how the sequel will be “ambitious” and “different” from other Batman films.
“It’s so ambitious. I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another… It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.”
If the villains and themes are what we suspect from the leaked set photos, videos, and possible new villain tease, then Pattinson is not exaggerating about the follow-up to The Batman.
The Batman Part II hits theaters February 18, 2028.
