Batman #160 is probably the best issue to date in the H2USH saga. In what has been a slow burning tale up until now, one does really get a sense of heightened stakes in this issue. In particular, Loeb does a masterful job of reaching back into DC lore to present a highly plausible reason for Red Hood’s hellish alliance with Hush. Whilst I don’t wish to delve into spoiler territory too much here, let’s just say the after effects of Jason’s death at the hands of Joker’s brutal beating has left a heavier toll than previously thought, one that requires Hush’s world class skill as a brain surgeon to remedy.

What Was. What Is.

I have always been a fan of stories that reference the events of the past, so I particularly enjoyed this interaction. It once again highlights the genius level mind of Hush aka Thomas Elliot. Such a master manipulator, his level of forward planning rivals Batman’s in every way, making him a fantastic rival. This is a character that has always been used sparingly over the years since his introduction in 2003, which makes his appearances feel extra special. Over-exposure is such a common thing in comic books, such is the temptation to keep going to the well if something works. Sometimes familiarity breeds contempt, but Hush remains an impactful character due to his scarcity in the canon.

That said, the old favourites remain key players here too, with Joker and Riddler key players in the story also. Throw in a surprise cameo from Bane (whose side is he truly on?) and this is a truly loaded issue indeed.

Ever the resourceful villain, Hush hasn’t just been co-opting existing characters, he has managed to create his own too! This is the catalyst for Jim Lee to come to the fore with some excellent artwork. Whilst his much-heralded return to the main Batman title has been very solid, it hasn’t changed the world too much in my opinion, but here he proves why he is regarded as one of the all time greats in the pantheon of comic book artists. His panels depicting our titular hero engaging in fisticuffs with Hush’s strange new monsters is a feast for the eyes. Batman’s brute strength is apparent, even in the face of physically superior opponents. Remember….Batman always wins!!!

Conclusion

Batman #160 is undoubtedly the high point of H2USH to date. With more Robins than you can shake a stick at, the deck is truly loaded. What is Riddler’s true motivation for wanting to help our heroes? Joker, having recovered in a fashion that Lazarus would be jealous of, has his pick of Nightwing and Red Hood in his crosshairs, so who will fall? Why is Bane helping Damian? So many questions ready to be answered in due course. Whilst anybody knows the ultimate outcome will be the hero on top, I do feel that the longer term effects will be far reaching indeed. Bring on Batman #161.
