Review by Fay Clark
Cas has been through a lot in the past couple of issues. We left her on a train going out of Gotham, running with her mother Lady Shiva. If those two skill assassins are running, you know they are up again some craziness in Batgirl #3.
Am I seeing double?
So, we have Cas running from her problems, which is something she has not done in a long time. It feels so alien to her, Tate Brombal has done a great job of showing this in her inner monologue. There are certain lines later in Batgirl #3 that almost had me sobbing, but also smiling at the same time. Happy tears of growth and love, Cas really does deserve the best. Brombal is quickly showing what a great writer he is for this series.
The interactions between Cas, Lady Shiva and the rest of the cast are really good. There is always something that Cas is honed in on trying to figure out the meaning behind it. Brombal does so with such sleight of hand, that it feels like a natural flow. Thinking and analysing things, all while having a conversation and paying attention to the smallest details.
Train Combat
Wow, Takeshi Miyazawa has taken a leaf out of Bruno Redondo’s book. There are a few panels that made me think of the recent run of Nightwing and go “oh, damn. Are we doing this now? SICK!” I loved the style of fight scene this inspiration brought on. Then you add in the gritty coloring of Mike Spicer in Batgirl #3 and you get a dark and enclosed space that adds layers of mystery to the story.
Conclusion
I am so interested to see where this run of Batgirl goes. There is so much going on, under layers of other things going on. The one person that has any chance of figuring it out is definitely our girl Cas. Can not wait to read more of this series.
