Review by Bryant Lucas
Tensions rise under water as a mysterious plague threatens to destroy Atlantis in this month’s Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #35.
Plunged into an underwater crisis, Atlantis faces a deadly fungal plague that transforms Tritonians into monsters. With tensions between the two Atlantean cities of Tritonis and Poseidonis already high, King Ronal blames Poseidonis for the outbreak, igniting the threat of war. While Superman, Batman, and Robin investigate the disease, Aquaman and Mera struggle to maintain peace amid political unrest in Poseidonis. The issue crescendos with a dramatic betrayal by Ronal, a shocking attack on Superman, and the arrival of the Floronic Man, setting the stage for an explosive conflict.
Something Fishy This Way Comes
Mark Waid crafts a compelling script that balances large-scale conflict with intimate character moments. The stakes are monumental, but Waid still finds room for levity—such as Robin teasing Aquaman about “octopus volleyball.” The political intrigue adds depth to the story, with mistrust and cultural tensions driving the plot. Waid’s characterization is sharp, particularly in Superman’s attempts to defuse the situation diplomatically and Aquaman’s struggle to lead amidst dissent. However, the pacing occasionally feels rushed, particularly during the transition to the Floronic Man’s appearance, which could have benefitted from more buildup.
Unda Da Sea – But Epic!
Adrián Gutiérrez’s dynamic art shines in this issue, capturing the grandeur and chaos of Atlantis with stunning underwater visuals. His expressive character work is a standout, from Superman’s desperation during Ronal’s attack to Mera’s commanding presence as a queen. Tamra Bonvillain’s vibrant colors bring the oceanic setting to life, with rich greens and blues immersing readers in the story. The action sequences are fluid and engaging, though the panel layouts occasionally feel crowded during high-intensity moments.
Conclusion
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #35 is an excellent opening chapter for this underwater epic, blending superhero action, political intrigue, and character-driven drama. Waid’s writing and Gutiérrez’s art work in harmony to deliver a story that’s both thrilling and visually spectacular, leaving readers eager for the next installment.
