Review by Adam Ray
Catwoman #71 has continued to reinvent our lead character. Selena has gone truly international in this new run of issues. We saw the swift response to a friend in need in the last issue, but now Catwoman’s past has reared its head in a much less friendly way. The wonderful look at a modern European setting has given the character a new look that is all the more welcome in this wider storytelling context.
Patricio Delpeche has taken a chance to turn this Catwoman run into a master class of how good colour work can tell a story. We get to see how the muted blues and purples are all welcome ways to show the mystery of the night and the sombre attitude Selina has to everything. Even between pages, the lighter blues of Catwoman jump to the rushing reds of the issue’s antagonist forces. The radical changes in colour swatches give us a visual whiplash as readers, keeping us engaged.
We can count on the greatest thief in DC comics to consistently reinvent herself. The changes in visuals as well as how she handles her disguises and costuming is always a welcome sight.
Conclusion
Catwoman #71 brings readers a delight in visual storytelling. With a gripping run of visuals. That have an unlikely level of architectural realism and immersion that we otherwise rarely get in comics as of late. Any kind of story can be told through a format like this, and we can only imagine where this stunning series will take us.
