Review by James Attias
Detective Comics #1086 is an improvement on the last issue, so I’m going to be nothing but positive (he types through gritted teeth). I will also be saying sarcastically throughout this review that some things were “Hard to tell”, but enjoyable.)
Guess Who’s Back
So, Batman’s officially back in Gotham, back from the dead, back to fighting bad guys, and to save the soul of Gotham from the sinister Orgham family. You’d think this would be a triumphant return, but Ram V’s gone in a different direction. Something’s wrong with the Dark Knight, I think… it’s hard to tell. Is he also recruiting for his war against the Orgham-run Gotham villains, rogues, and brainwashed citizens? I think… it’s hard to tell.
Either way, we also get a great return for someone else, who’s been missing for a while. She’s a crazy character who’s the daughter of a DC supervillain, although probably not the one you think! Find out more in the next issue!
Flaw and Order
The backup story of this issue was great. I’m not 100% sure when it was set, but I think it’s directly after the story we just read…. it’s hard to tell. Other than when it was set, it gives a great glimpse into the inner battle that Harvey Dent and Two-Face have whenever they have to make a decision, usually with someone’s life on the line. With the two constantly at odds the flip of the coin is always the deciding factor. This was a great addition to the issue and I loved that Harvey was drawn very similarly to how he looked in Batman: The Animated Series.
Conclusion
Detective Comics #1086 has a great cover, a great moment in the main story, and a great backup tale. Add all that up and you have a really decent read! Next issue, let’s aim for a solid good read.
