Suicide Squad: Dream Team #1 brings a whole new roster to Task Force X.  The Suicide Squad property is hot hot hot right now, particularly with the video game releasing last month. I also happen to be reviewing the prequel comic series, which has been an absolute hoot, so far. What a time to be alive for all Suicide Squad fans!

Dreams or Nightmares?

The focus character for the first issue is a do-gooder named Nia Nal, or Dreamer. Of course, we’re all well and truly familiar with Amanda Waller at this point, and she’s up to her old tricks again in this issue. She reminds me a lot of Dolores Umbridge from the Harry Potter series, just one of those characters that you love to hate. Dreamer, on the other hand, seems a little naïve in this world she’s (mostly) unwillingly stepped into and you can’t help but feel for the young girl.

I’ve always enjoyed the dynamic of team comics like this and Maines has already captured that essence with the very first issue. Without spoiling who’s on the roster, I will say there are some surprising additions. I can already tell that this is going to be a very fun and well-written series, so I’m super excited to be reviewing it!

Nicole Maines is an inspiration. She helped build the character of Dreamer by playing her in live-action, starting in the CW’s Supergirl, before appearing in other “Arrowverse” shows, too. Then she made the jump to comics, by writing the in-continuity adventures of the character she helped to create.

Barrows, Ferreira, and Lucas are a fantastic art team. For me, the Suicide Squad just screams big loud colors and crazy adventures. This issue is a little muted in that aspect, by which I mean it isn’t filled with it. There are, however, a few panels in which the artists really cut loose. The dream realm feels like something from Alice In Wonderland, and you can tell that the artists had a great time working on it.

Conclusion

Suicide Squad: Dream Team #1 delivers a very solid start to the series. We get new characters, a new mission… and the same old Amanda Waller. Things look very promising, and I’m really looking forward to more.
