Batman: Caped Crusader head writer Ed Brubaker has warned fans that the upcoming show will be different than Batman: The Animated Series, both in tone and setting.
In an interview with the Comic Book Club podcast, Brubaker offered a little insight on the new animated show. According to the writer, the show will set itself apart from the much-lauded Batman: The Animated Series. In Caped Crusader, producer Bruce Timm will be able to cut loose more. Unlike BTAS, the new show will not air on network television and, hence, will not be held back by the network censors.
I’ll warn you guys, it’s definitely a lot different than [Batman: The Animated Series]. It’s very much a re-conception of starting over. It’s not PG-13, but it’s definitely a lot different. It’s sort of like the show Bruce Timm always wanted to make, but that they wouldn’t let him make.
There’s a lot more, you know, people actually getting punched on camera, and… I don’t want to spoil it for you guys, but it’s – everyone will kill me if I say it, but it’s kind of noir. It’s definitely a different take that I hope people will love, but I think people will also be shocked by some things.”
Brubaker may be slightly exaggerating the censorship in BTAS a teensy bit, as the series definitely showed Batman punching people in the face all the time. However, fans can take away that Caped Crusader will be slightly more mature in tone than its predecessor, particularly the part where Brubaker teases that fans will “be shocked by some things”. It will be interesting to see how the show will continue to give a different, more noir take on a character as long-standing as Batman.

Ther writer also talked about a few interesting details about where the timeline of the show. To the interviewer’s surprise, Brubaker revealed that he actually wrapped his part of writing for Caped Crusader about a year and a half ago and will not be working on the show for season two. There are also early cuts of the episodes already out there, which implies that the animation’s mostly done and just needs to be cleaned up and edited.
He also discussed how he also brought The Last of Us writer Halley Gross and former Batman writer Greg Rucka on board. Rucka will write a Renée Montoya introduction episode. Overall, it sounds like Caped Crusader is shaping up to be an awesome animated experience.
