The Batman Deluxe statue by Iron Studios is taken from The Flash (2023) and is available to pre-order from Sideshow Collectibles. It’s a formidable piece from what is no doubt going to prove to be a pivotal chapter in the long history of Batman screen adaptations.
As you read this, The Flash is hitting screens around the world and, as predicted, people are talking about Michael Keaton’s return as Bruce Wayne just as much as Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen. Since the reveal about Keaton’s involvement, we’ve been hoping that, given the multiversal nature of the movie, this wouldn’t just be cameo that paid lip service to one of the many incarnations of Batman.
The trailers gave us hope, with the producers clearly aware that Keaton’s 1989 Batman was a major selling point. Then the synopsis emerged, and it turned out that Bruce Wayne is actually integral to story, firstly at the emotional core and drive of the movie which is about Barry Allen risking the future by changing the past to save his mother, as no-one understands Barry’s motivation more than Bruce. Secondly, in terms of the plot, when Barry inadvertently causes a world without superheroes and is faced with the arrival of General Zod, who does he turn to in his hour of need? (Am I right in thinking I don’t need to type the answer here?)
Keaton’s turn as Batman for Tim Burton’s two movies back in 1989 and 1992 woke up the wider world to nuanced character balancing a tragic past. A brooding, thoughtful loner sometimes simmering with anger, and yet self-aware enough to know just how cool his Dark Knight persona was. He created a template for the character that every actor since has given a version of. Recently, The Flash director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti revealed that Keaton’s involvement was integral for the movie to go ahead.
So it seems that Barry Allen wasn’t the only one turning to Batman from Earth-789 with desperate eyes!
Here he is; arms folded and in a power stance, a perfect pose to communicate understated strength. It’s a position we sometimes see Superman in, because he’s backed up by phenomenal power. This version of the Dark Knight draws on a different power – Bruce is older, wiser and after a period of retirement due to another death, he’s suffered too much loss to have anything left to lose.
While the suit looks a little more armored than the Batman ’89 days, the mask and cowl still has that majestic shape, that would frustrate Keaton due to the restriction of head movement. His pain was our gain – future versions have been more practical-looking (particularly the version Robert Patterson wears in The Batman (2022)), but there’s no denying the visual appeal of that sleek neck leading up to those tall points.
The statue comes with interchangeable heads, where you can swap the cowled head for an unmasked Bruce Wayne, and suddenly the whole statues carries even more depth. Even if you knew nothing about the movie from which this was taken from, seeing an older man in that costume, in that stance seems to have a whole story attached to it.
Andy Muschietti recently reported that they went to great lengths to recreate the look of Wayne Manor and the Batcave from the Batman ’89 movie. This statue recognizes those important elements to the character with a base that has stalagmites around a metal platform.
The new Batman Deluxe statue by Iron Studios stands like an immovable object. It’s a piece of art that screams end-of-the-line-folks, there’s no passing this Dark Knight. He’s seen it all and done it all and still standing with the skills and ability to make a difference in our hour of need. He’s waiting for your request, or your challenge, but honestly, who’s going to argue with him?
