Warner Bros. Unveils Synopsis for ‘The Suicide Squad’

Thankfully, The Suicide Squad finished filming before the U.S. went into quarantine, back in March of 2020. Since they were able to commit everything to film, postproduction continued as scheduled with no delays. Earlier this week, writer/director James Gunn confirmed, in an impromptu Twitter Q&A, that TSS was complete. It seems that they’d only recently completed the film, because around the same time, Warner Bros. also unveiled the official synopsis..

The Skwad heads to Corto Maltese

Unfortunately, it doesn’t provide very much more than what we already knew, but take a look anyway:

Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Bell Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out — even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favorite [psycho], Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese

While the mention of Corto Maltese should make DC fans’ faces light up, it was actually already spoiled for us way back in November, when Gunn and producer Peter Safran told DigitalSpy all about Task Force X’s mission. (In case you weren’t aware, Corto Maltese is a fictional country, named after a comic-strip character, that has been mentioned in DC continuity a few times. Originally named in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, where a Cuban Missile Crisis-esque situation was escalating. The U.S. sent Superman to defuse the situation. He was momentarily incapacitated when hit with a nuclear missile.)

This mission will drop the skwad in the middle of the island nation; their objective, to destroy an old Nazi laboratory and prison called Jotunheim. All of this information tracks when you look back at the scarce footage that has been released so far. The action seems to take place in a tropical environment away from civilization, which makes sense considering that Corto Maltese is supposed to be a remote island, off the coast of South America.

Hopefully, a trailer?

So what does the synopsis for The Suicide Squad really give us? It’s probably the start of WB’s marketing campaign, which means more imminent marketing material, that will hopefully include a long overdue trailer.  I want it, and I want it now.

Stay tuned to DKN for more updates.

The Suicide Squad hits theatres and HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
