Last month, a journalist over at The Hollywood Reporter explained that his sources were projecting a November start date for Matt Reeves’ upcoming solo Batman movie, which has been tentatively titled, The Batman. Considering the journalist seemed to be sharing news that he heard rather than writing an full-on article regarding it, it was safe to assume that nothing was set in stone. It came off as more hearsay than anything, therefore I firmly filed it away as a rumor.
With so much speculation surrounding it, it’s really hard to sort the fact from the fiction. The last update from a credible source that I remember was from Matt Reeves himself, back in August of last year. At that point, he seemed to be expecting a mid-2019 start date.
However, it seems that there was quite a bit of weight to THR’s hearsay. In fact, it was pretty accurate. Everything points to the production being pushed back a few months, towards later 2019. I can confidently say that this isn’t a rumor anymore, because Matt Reeves actually confirmed it himself… on Twitter.
Straight from the horse’s mouth
Responding to a fan query – Apparently, it’s as simple as asking the writer/director himself, Reeves seems to believe that it’s likely before the year’s end.

I wish I can say it’s confirmation, but it seems that Reeves isn’t sure himself. While rumors continue to persist, it’s kinda difficult to rule any of them out, with regards to the production schedule as there is no certainty yet to disprove them. So, while Reeves thinks that it’ll start before 2020, he’s pretty careful to use vague language. As far as we can tell, as time moves forward, things tend to change. Since Reeves’ last update in August, production seems to have been pushed back, and this could continue. After all, we don’t even have an actor cast in the lead role yet.
As I said before, with a project as important as this, Reeves can continue to take all the time needed. I want this to be a good Batman movie, don’t you?
