The third chapter of Frank Miller’s Dark Knight trilogy just got a little bit bigger. DC Comics announced that an extra ninth issue will be added to Dark Knight III: The Master Race.
Miller had this to say about the series that he and Brian Azzarello are co-writing:
“Once you dive into the Dark Knight mythology, it’s hard to pull yourself out. Those characters cannot be contained and neither can we.”
Azzarello weighed in on the matter too, saying that “this story turned out to be bigger than the both of us.”
DKIII: The Master Race was initially solicited as an eight-part mini-series written by Miller and Azzerello, with art by Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson. The series started late 2015 and has since then suffered from multiple delays. The series was originally slated to conclude in March 2017, but due to the extra ninth issue, will end in Spring 2017.
The series is a continuation of Miller’s seminal The Dark Knight Returns storyline that began in 1986 and its sequel The Dark Knight Strikes Again from 2002. DKIII follows the grizzled Batman and Superman’s battle against an army of religious zealots from Kandor. Spoiler alert: so far the comic has been awesome.
Dark Knight III: The Master Race #6 will arrive in stores on October 19.
