Over the weekend, the new slate of DC animated films was announced at the Batman: The Killing Joke panel. Moderator and WB Home Entertainment PR, Gary Miereanu confirmed Justice League Dark, Teen Titans: Judas Contract, and a Bruce Timm original story for 2017.
However, a few hours ago, a sneak peek for Justice League Dark leaked onto the Internet. It featured a brief teaser followed by a behind the scenes featurette, showing storyboards, commentary, and voice cast. It was seemingly taken from the Killing Joke Blu-ray out next week, where it was placed as a special feature.
Take a look:
A few awesome things to take away from this:
- Jay Oliva, known for directing Batman: Assault on Arkham and The Dark Knight Returns, is directing Justice League Dark.
- It is set in the New 52 continuity with Jason O’Mara reprising his role as Batman.
- Matt Ryan, known for playing John Constantine in the short-lived live-action TV series Constantine, will be reprising his role in the animated movie.
- It will hit shelves in Fall 2016.
After his work on The Dark Knight Returns animated feature, Jay Oliva hit my list of favorite directors pretty hard, so that news is exciting for me. Also, it sounds like Jason O’Mara is settling into his role of Batman very nicely. Overall, this one looks great, despite the lackluster movies so far released under this New 52 continuity.
However, I am a little confused about the release date. At the Killing Joke panel, it was said that Justice League Dark would be released early next year, while this video is proof that it is set for Fall 2016. And you’ll obviously listen to the video than take my word for it. My educated guess for the incongruous release schedules is that this video was produced a little earlier, prior to a minor setback that caused a delay in the release schedule, with the official confirmation announced at Comic-Con.
Either that or we will be getting sooner than later.
