Marvel Comics announced this afternoon that Mike Marts will be returning to Marvel in February as Executive Editor. Marts had previously worked with Marvel as Senior Editor for X-Men Comics, most notably Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly’s New X-Men and the Joss Whedon and John Cassaday title Astonishing X-Men, but left the company in 2006 after a decade of service. From there he began his work with the Caped Crusader at DC, managing Batman as Group Editor until the present.
Though Marvel has yet to reveal which titles Marts will be attached to when he returns, it is worth noting that they are currently in the midst of the Marvel NOW! initiative, so there’s plenty of opportunity for the new editor. Marts himself had the following to say about his new role (fromMarvel’s official announcement):
“It’s amazing to see how Marvel has grown as a company since I worked there last… I am beyond thrilled to be rejoining this powerhouse at such an exciting time.”
Newsarama has speculated that Marts’ shift to Marvel may have something to do with DC’s decision to consolidate their operations in Burbank, CA, effectively eliminating their New York offices. While this is not the official reason for Marts’ departure, it stands to reason that if the move to Burbank is a factor, Marts may not be the only DC employee we see heading elsewhere in the near future.
While it’s sad to see him go, we at DarkKnightNews.com nonetheless applaud Mike Marts for a good run with Batman, wish him the best of luck with Marvel, and hope that maybe his days in Gotham are not entirely over.
