Just like with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad is off to a great start at the box office, despite the early mixed and negative reviews. So far, the DC Entertainment film of bad guys trying to do some good has earned $65 million during its opening day box office. This includes the record-breaking $20.5 million grossed on Thursday night showings.
For all-time opening day grosses, Suicide Squad sits at twenty-first, easily out grossing Marvel’s Iron Man 3, but falling short of DC’s own The Dark Knight.
Some impressive milestones the film has reached include becoming the biggest opening day ever for ANY movie in Russia, by taking in $3.9 million. The film also took in more than its Marvel brother Guardians of the Galaxy in Australia, as well as this year’s Deadpool in the opening weekend. In fact, the midnight showing in Australia was the second-biggest ever for a movie there. It also earned the biggest opening day ever in August in Brazil. It is also now the biggest opening day for a superhero movie in Holland as well.
The weekend is still young and plenty of time for more records to be shattered, but a strong opening weekend won’t be enough for Warner Bros. We saw a similar successful opening weekend with Batman v Superman, then that film dropped like a rock in its second weekend. Currently sitting at a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes, the studio needs to hope for positive word of mouth this opening weekend if it wants to have better legs than its predecessor.
