THE MULTIVERSITY: THE JUST #1 by Grant Morrison and Ben Oliver
Yes, this issue has been out for a few weeks, but it’s never too late to talk about something this sensational. The latest one-shot that occupies the orrery of Grant Morrison’s grand scheme is not only highly enjoyable, it is a treat for fans that have a vast appreciation for supporting characters. Many of them have stepped up to assume the mantle of DC’s most iconic heroes. Morrison has proved time and again that he can write for pretty much any type of character. Joining him is artist Ben Oliver whose work is nothing short of phenomenal.
This issue takes place on the aptly titled “Earth Me” – or Earth 16 to be more specific. The tabloid-esque cover perfectly sets the tone for what is found within. We’re presented with a somewhat meta-textual story that showcases a world in which everyone is extremely self-absorbed and finds little enjoyment in their surroundings. Sound familiar? It’s a relevant meditation on the state of our society and how many view aspects of pop culture. There’s also a great quote from Batman when he basically says people care too much about offending others. Really think about that. Sure, I complain online as any human does, but I try to spread positivity as well. Read the comments on any article on a pop culture or social media site and see how many people say something negative for the sake of doing such. It may be something they don’t even care about, yet they still go out of their way to put something down. But I digress.
In short, this issue sees several superheroes band together to investigate a superhero suicide. It may or may not have something to do with the “haunted comic” that’s been a main focus of this series. While this issue does stand on its own, it really begins to tie together important threads as Multiversity moves forward.
The heroes featured are worth the price of admission alone. I briefly touched on it earlier – if you love legacy heroes, you can’t pass up this book. Featured are Batman/ Damian Wayne (whose relationship with Alexis Luthor is a real highlight), Superman/ Chris Kent, Flash/ Wally West, Green Lantern/ Kyle Rayner, and Green Arrow/ Connor Hawke just to name a few. Several of those are more comparable to pre-New 52 versions of those characters. If that appeals to you, add that to the checklist of reasons to buy this issue. If you haven’t already, be sure to do so because the next one-shot, “Pax Americana”, is set to hit stands next week. Score: 9.5/10
