“Hush” writer Jeph Loeb talks about his time working on the original storyline, as well as what to expect in the second half of “Hush 2”.
‘A Complete Waste of Time…’
At a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Loeb revealed how the original “Hush” comic storyline was not well regarded by his comic book peers. In fact, Loeb stated that an unnamed DC Comics editor once called it a “…complete waste of time”.
“The best part was that no one at DC thought we were gonna be able to pull it off. We had no allies whatsoever. So much so, there was an editor who is no longer there, who was a very big, powerful guy there goes, ‘This is a complete waste of time. These guys are never going to do this and, if they do, it is going to take years for them to do it.’”
To make matters worst, people literally made a betting pool on how late the delays will be on “Hush”.
“The one thing you don’t do to Jim Lee is challenge him. That’s a mistake. If you’re in a card game with this guy, he’s not bluffing. He could look you dead in the face and go, ‘I’m bluffing.’ Well, he’s not. And so they literally started a pool where they took bets on whether we could do it, and they bet us that we had to get to Issue #7 by Valentine’s Day [2023]; and that was a year before then. So he and I worked it out in a way that we were going to be able to do this.”
Jeph Loeb on Naming Hush
Of course, the issues of the original ‘Hush” story arc did indeed come in on time with zero delays. With that being said, during the process of “Hush”, there were some creative hiccups. Like, not even knowing what to name the title villain.
“The [funny] part is that we couldn’t tell anybody what we were working on, and it wasn’t really until about the fourth or fifth issue when Jim called and went, ‘Does this character have a name? I really need to tell somebody,'” Loeb recalled. “And I was looking at the board and I went [covers mouth], and that’s how Hush became Hush, because we had to put something on the board.”
The Future of ‘Hush 2’
Jeph Loeb was also being cagey about what to expect from the second part of “Hush 2”. However, he did tease there will be huge consequences for Batman down the line.
“I can’t tell you anything that happens in the second half, except that it will have a major, major implication on Batman in general.”
There is no word on when the second half of “Hush 2” will come out. Hopefully, fans will eventually get an update on the ongoing storyline.
