Greg Capullo Announces (Mostly) Retiring from Illustrating

Greg Capullo confirms that he is retiring from drawing interior art for comics.

Capullo dropped a bit of a bomb in the most recent MegaCon panel.

Why Is Greg Capullo Retiring from Interior Pages?

He cited his age 64 and wanting to spend more quality time with his wife. He has also been fortunate to have a wildly successful career drawing comics, which has afforded him to turn down interior art jobs.

“You look at the clock. I don’t want to bring it all down here, but I’m going to be 64 this month. Jesus Christ, right? I’ve seen a lot of people die earlier. I really love my wife, and I’ve spent so much time just sitting at that table working. I want to spend a lot more time with my wife. She’s great.”

Another reason for Capullo wanting to retire from interiors is due his long-time art time has also broken up. Jonathan Glapion has been Capullo’s inker forever, working with him from Haunt to Batman. But now, Glapion has his own pencilling career, making it more difficult to collaborate with Capullo.

“I recently lost my art team, my longtime art team. One guy I won’t even discuss, but Jonathan Glapion, my friend, has gone on to become his own artist. I’m very proud of him. He’s working under [Todd] McFarlane. He’s got his own thing going.”

Popverse reported that “one guy I won’t even discuss” is colorist FCO Plascencia. Plascencia has been Capullo’s primary color artist for the better part of 15 years. However, on Wolverine: Revenge, Plascencia quit midway through the series. While  it has never been officially confirmed, Capullo and Plascencia allegedly had a falling out.

Capullo Turning Down Drawing for ‘Absolute Batman’

Furthermore, Absolute Batman writer and frequent collaborator Scott Snyder revealed that Greg Capullo turned down an opportunity to draw a two-issue story arc for the Absolute title. The arc was to feature the Absolute version of the Court of Owls- which have been introduced in issue #17. This of course is an homage since Snyder and Capullo created the Court of Owl’s first appearance.  However, Capullo felt that the homage might be a step too far, as well as the difficulty rebuilding a new art team.

“The Court of Owls is doing an interior [pages]. It’s not the right fit for my pencils, so I go, it’s too hard to build a new team at this point. So, that’s one of the things that’s bothered me. And then the new guard has arrived. There’s a lot of great new artists, and you guys don’t need me anymore.”

With that being said, Capullo did confirm he will still doing covers and convention appearances.
