Review by Sharna Jahangir
We’re about to see who really brings the heat. But let’s be honest, the real deciding factor is whichever side Mothra chooses.
This issue delivers everything you could want from a crossover of this magnitude: colossal battles, inventive hero-monster team-ups, and a surprising amount of heart. While the Justice League and their monster allies struggle to hold the line against a horde of mind-controlled creatures, a separate mission unfolds in the depths. Cyborg has facilitated a symbiotic link between Godzilla and a new ally to accelerate the ancient lizard’s healing, preparing him for the battle ahead.
The true stars, however, are artists Duce and Guerrero. The splash pages are breathtaking, capturing the immense scale and raw power of these icons. The visual of a Green Lantern construct empowering Kong is an iconic image that encapsulates the fun of this series. From Godzilla’s atomic breath lighting up the page to the sheer brutality of the Titan brawl, every panel is packed with energy and vivid imagery.
The Story
Buccellato’s script masterfully juggles a massive cast. While the ground-level fight with the Justice League is desperate and thrilling, the real joy comes from the quieter, more absurd moments. The Flash’s internal monologue about being used to standing in the shadow of giants, only to be dwarfed by Kong and Godzilla, is a perfect blend of humor and awe. The introduction of a new energy-transferring ally for Godzilla is a clever narrative device that gets the King of the Monsters back in the action where he belongs.
Buccellato expertly balances the absurdity of a Justice League/MonsterVerse crossover with genuine character beats, giving everyone from The Flash to Kong a moment to shine. His script moves at a breakneck pace, ensuring the massive cast and epic scale never feel overwhelming, while injecting just the right amount of humor to keep the tone engaging.
The Art
Christian Duce is the perfect choice for this project. His dynamic style captures both the iconic likenesses of the DC heroes and the awe-inspiring scale of the Titans. His action sequences are explosive, making every punch from Kong and every blast from Godzilla feel impactful. It pulls you into this world that despite its insanity, looks alluring. In combination with Guerrero’s inks give Duce’s pencils a tremendous sense of weight and depth, crucial for a book featuring gigantic monsters. The heavy shadows and strong linework help define the massive forms of Godzilla and Kong, making them feel like tangible, three-dimensional creatures within the chaotic battlefields.
Colorist Luis Guerrero delivers a vibrant and moody palette that sells the different tones of the story. He uses cooler, atmospheric tones for Godzilla’s deep-sea resting place and the Hollow Earth, while blasting the battle scenes with hot, intense colors that make the energy attacks and monster roars pop off the page.
The lettering here is part of what makes this comic so fun to consume. Starkings provides a clean and effective lettering job that guides the reader through the visual chaos without ever getting in the way of the art. His use of varied, jagged sound effects (“RRRYYYAAARRR,” “KRAK”) perfectly mimics the monstrous roars and impacts, adding an extra layer of sensory detail to the reading experience.
Conclusion
By the issue’s end, the tides have turned. It’s a wild, blockbuster ride that respects the legacy of both the DC heroes and the legendary monsters. It certainly makes for an unforgettable read. What I appreciate the most is the hard work that placed in by all involved making this amusing world come to life on paper. Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong 2 #7 is available everywhere now!
