DC Celebrates 40th Anniversary of ‘The Dark Knight Returns’

DC Comics is gonna pull out all the stops to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Dark Knight Returns with art shows, retrospectives, reprintings, and tons of merchandise.

The ComicsPro Conference kicks things off with a retrospective panel featuring writer/artist Frank Miller and inker Klaus Janson. ComicsPro is a convention for comic book shop owners and is held in Glendale, CA. The panel will have Miller and Janson reflect on the legacy and cultural impact of TDKR. Stay tuned to Dark Knight News for the highlights of the panel.

In February, DC will reprint the individual issues of TDKR  in the popular Facsimile Editions. The publisher will release issues #1-4 Facsimile Editions monthly.

There will also be the release of  Batman: The Dark Knight Returns: DC Compact Comics Edition. Now the entire saga is collected in one volume. This allows new readers to have access to the seminal story. The Compact Edition hits stores on April 7, 2026.

On Batman Day 2026, DC will release the Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition hardcover. The collection will be a  remastered graphic novel. It also sports a new cover by Frank Miller.

‘The Dark Knight Returns’ Merchandise Releases

During this coming summer, DC will release a series of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns 40th Anniversary variant covers, featuring top-tier artists from across the industry paying tribute to the comic. It will be a wide range of artistic interpretations inspired by the world The Dark Knight Returns.

There are also a huge merchandise releases throughout the year to commemorate the graphic novel. They offer will include a commemorative jacket, a limited, hand-numbered art print in partnership with Sideshow Collectibles, washed-black graphics tees, drop-shoulder hoodie, duffel bag, and more. The black T-shirts are reusing Miller’s art in a white outline to create a gestalt effect. The commemorative jacket is an awesome montage of the various panels from the graphic novel.
