‘Absolute Batman’ Shows a Grotesque, New Look for Bane

Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder drops a new visual tease that Bane will look more different than we originally anticipated.

Initially, fans spotted the cover for Absolute Batman #9 featuring the new version of Bane. For the most part, he looked fairly similar to his traditional look: big muscles, Venom tubes coming out of his back, and a black luchador mask.

But now Snyder put out a teaser image that implies that Bane maybe doesn’t look like his usual self  all of the time. Additionally, the image features the next storyline’s title: “Abomination”.

It’s not clear if the title is a dig at Bane co-creator Graham Nolan’s first reaction to the Absolute version of Bane. It is also possible that “Abomination” is an apt way to describe Bane’s new look, which looks insanely grotesque.

Abomination

The image resembles a tunnel of disgustingly pulsating muscles. And in the very end of the muscle tunnel is Bane’s teeny head. What does that mean? Is Bane even a humanoid or something else?

Spoilers Alert!

This also is reminiscent of the small scenes we have seen of the Joker in Absolute Batman. At the end of issue 6, the Joker tells his henchmen to get Bane. Meanwhile, the Joker is… sitting on a throne of babies? But at the same time, it looks like a humanoid, adult hand is breaking through the baby bodies?

The visual was fairly oblique and disturbing, but perhaps it is also related to how Bane himself is formed in the Absolute Universe.

Absolute Bane is an ‘Embodiment of War’

In an interview with AIPT, Scott Snyder described Bane. It seems like his backstory involves Alfred too.

“Bane is almost like the embodiment of war… He’s capable of all these terrible things. And Alfred knows — Bruce has no idea what he’s walking into. Bane is a total reflection of Bruce…a nightmarish version.”

It definitely looks like Batman will have his work cut out for him when he encounters Bane.

Absolute Batman #9 hits comic book shops on June 11th.
