Review by Fay Clark
We saw the Birds create a lot of chaos with an under cover mission that went awry. What is on the docket for the next mission? Who knows?! Let’s all find out together in Birds of Prey #18.
Sisterly Bonding? Or Fight Club?
The day I stop harping on about how amazing Kelly Thompson’s writing is, you probably need to check I am still alive. This lady is a freaking word wizard. The interpersonal relationships within the team are outstanding. I love every interaction that Thompson puts on the page. They are all so true to character, and the pithy one liners kill me every time. I don’t think I have ever laughed as much at a 28 page comic, as I do when Kelly Thompson is writing. Birds of Prey #18 is another stunning example of how easy it is to have a whole roster of characters, each with their own individual voices.
Have I said lately how much I love Big Barda? She is just so awesome. Her humor is outstanding and every time she opens her mouth I am hooked. There are several times in Birds of Prey #18 that I physically out loud said “Barda, yes!” when maybe the team are saying “Barda…no!”. I will give almost any body part to have a mini series of just Barda and Small Bat, roaming around and getting into trouble, as long it was written by Thompson. Where do I sign? Take my money.

Welcome Juann Cabal. I saw the first page of Birds of Prey #18 and said “well, you’re a new artist, and I LOVE IT!”. I really, really like this art style. The comic but slightly realistic style is one of my faves, and Cabal does this beautifully. There are several moments in the background of hilarious faces that characters are pulling, that probably aren’t meant to be focused on, but that is what I saw. One face of Black Canary’s in particular I cracked up when I saw. The coloring style of Adriano Lucas really helps brighten up the panels. There is some amazing shadow work from Lucas, really helping give the images depth and realism. I love this pairing and hope to see more of it soon!
Conclusion
Yes. That’s all… just, Yes.
