DC Studios officially announced a Clayface solo movie written by Mike Flannagan.

Mike Flanagan is best known as the director of Doctor Sleep– the horror sequel to The Shining. The Batman director Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will produce the film through their company 6th & Idaho Productions.

The studio has already announced a release date of September 11, 2026. The release time is interesting given that it comes out about 6 weeks before the sequel to The Batman. This led many fans to believe that maybe the movie is a lead-in for the next The Batman. However, James Gunn made it clear Clayface will be unrelated to The Batman Part II. He even went so far as to specifically state that Clayface will not be a villain in the next The Batman movie.

Mike Flanagan on Clayface

Making a Clayface movie has been a long-time coming for Flanagan. He tweeted about his idea of it in 2021. On then-Twitter, Flanagan said he was “really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.”

Flanagan then pitched his movie idea to DC Studios in 2023. Now, it seems like the studio executives were happy with his pitch and now are moving forward with it. At the time, DC Studios is still on the hunt for a director. Flanagan is unlikely to direct given that he has other commitments with new reboots of other horror franchises, like The Exorcist  and Carrie.

What will ‘Clayface’ be About?

There is no inkling on the plot or even which Clayface will be featured in it. Presumably, this version of Clayface is a part of James Gunn’s DC Universe. This means that it is possible that the movie will star the Clayface that is introduced in his animated Creature Commandos series.

Given Flanagan’s horror movie roots, one hopes that he leans into the scary sides of the character. In fact, if they decide to go with the mud monster shape-shifter, that aspect can really be highlighted with some body horror- similar to The Thing. Now that would be a movie that could really mess people up with its unique imagery.
