Batman #153 is an issue that feels like a new beginning for the title following on from the events of Absolute Power. Zdarsky creates the sense of a new status quo in Gotham City, with Batman attempting to balance his crime fighting duties with his philanthropic direction for Wayne Enterprises. It has been a while since the public side of Bruce Wayne has been highlighted in this title, so it makes a nice change to see the business leader in his day job. Seeing his corporate brain in full flow is always interesting and shows the dichotomy of the character.

It’s not all purely business here though, as Batman certainly has his hands full on the streets. There is a new player in town, in the form of a new vigilante named Commander Star. Swathed in red, white and blue, this is a strange character indeed. Impeccably mannered yet willing to use lethal force, the prospect of him clashing the Dark Knight is an interesting one for sure. Their initial clash is very good, as the visual elements of dark and light coming together are striking. There appears to be some form of collusion between Star and Vandal Savage too, although the full extent of that is yet to be revealed.

There is an interesting couple of subplots in here too. One is a seemingly reformed and pardoned Riddler entering the corporate world and expanding the reach of Nygmatech. Whilst Bruce Wayne is publicly endorsing him, Batman remains naturally suspicious and the verbal sparring between the two is deliciously written by Zdarsky. There is no doubt that Riddler has a hidden agenda and when his corporate machinations are revealed more, I feel that the city will never be the same.

Also, Mayor Nakano is in a tight spot both personally and professionally. With a failing marriage that is blighted by indiscretions and events conspiring to undermine his position, it is fair to say that his world is falling in on him. No spoilers here, but the final page of this issue is a jawdropper to say the least.

Conclusion

Batman #153 is a nice issue that sets up the next era of Bat-stories. With lots of moving parts to wrangle, Zdarsky does an effective job of keeping a tight leash on events. Nice adversaries, old ones up to no good and a new corporate landscape to navigate. It is fair to say Batman will have his hands full for some time to come….
