Review by James Attias

Detective Comics #1089 brings this long journey to an end. Some of you may have enjoyed the ride, but I for one have been ready for this to end for a while.

The End Of The Road

What can I say that I haven’t already said a million times throughout this run, either I’m missing a super new creative deeper meaning. ORRRRR this was a big mishmash that tried something that wasn’t for me. This issue ties up the Orgham storyline, but runs out of steam for the rest of the loose threads left dangling. Also just to clear the air, Ram V’s Swamp Thing was great, a real deep read that made you question reality, family, the earth. This tried to follow in that title’s footsteps, but this is Batman, this is Detective Comics, the second longest running title in DC’s history. It needs to be given the same care as Batman’s main run.

There Was a Back Up?

The back up story seemed more like the last two pages of the main story, honestly it wasn’t until I read the last page that I realized the main story ended so abruptly. The back up story by the ever spooky Dan Watters was the best bit of this book.
The art in this issue again, wasn’t terrible, but it still suffered from dark, costumed confusion.

Conclusion

Detective Comics #1089 is the end of the Gotham Nocturne, and the doorway into better things…. Thank you to Ram V, you tried something new, but I feel your skills would be better used on a smaller scale title, like you would kill on a book like Doom Patrol. Until then… Join us next time Bat-fans, new creative team, same nerdy reviewer!
