“Gotham City Sirens” – Part Four

Writer and Artist: Leah Williams
Artist: Daniel Hillyard, Brandt & Stein
Color Artist: Marissa Louise, Triona Farrell
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Things have come to a raucous but satisfying end to our triple team up here in Gotham City Sirens #4. The last issue made the stakes all the more serious, when we saw just how deep Punchline’s plans for profit. The Sirens do their absolute best to try and hold back her schemes, and with the light tone of the story brought to life by the mixed styles of artwork, we get to round out this story perfectly!

There’s a wonderful level of drama in this story. We get to see the different ways each of the Sirens all handle conflict. Selina is on the side lines, calling the shots and infiltrating somewhere heavily guarded. Poison Ivy uses her godlike meta-human powers to repel the mind controlled and keep the team secure.  Then Harley is striking hard directly to Punchline and doing her powerful and brash best to get in the villain’s face. Williams knows the strength of each character so well, and brings them to full attention in this story. Also the niche reference to Dungeons and Dragons always sits well with me.

The issue feels so jam packed because the richly illustrated action scenes each get their own chance to breathe! The fluid and gutter-less flipping movement of Catwoman in the laser grid matches the tone of Ivy standing as a green giant, and Harley falling from the helicopter all feels true to form in my opinion. The entire creative team has perfectly handled this cast of characters.

Conclusion

Gotham City Sirens #4 perfectly illustrates the dynamic this trio of characters has had and always should have. We see them at their best here, and after the rousing fun of this outing, I don’t think we’ll wait long before we see them team up again!
