Review by Fay Clark
Well, the Sirens are still here and kicking butt. It’s so good to see Harley, Ivy and Catwoman being awesome together again. We left them in a bit of a jam, as per normal comic book rules. Let’s see if they can figure out some answers in Gotham City Sirens #2.
Emotional Support Gat
Leah Williams seems to have a strong handle on how to write for these women. Obviously a fan of the characters herself, Williams manages to keep their personalities and voices separate. Gotham City Sirens #2 has some amazing character dialogue and interactions. The way Harley and Poison Ivy talk to each other is spot on for their relationship. We don’t lose their own strong personalities when they are grouped together. Having Catwoman to play off as well, is just pure class. The interactions between Harley and Kitty Cat are amazing to read.
Williams doesn’t seem to be a stranger to writing for groups of characters. We have the OG Sirens and some added scene partners for this series. I already have a favorite line from Jaina Hudson. She might be a lesser known character, but after Leah has gotten her hands on her she will definitely be more known.
Naked Bad Boys
Daniel Hillyard creates wonderful art to look at. The background work is very interesting. There always seems to be something happening that you can spend time looking for. Your eyes are naturally drawn to the foreground and the character, but I don’t want all the effort of good background work to go unnoticed. Gotham City Sirens #2 has some amazing color work by Triona Farrell also. There is one particular panel that is so minimalist, yet stunning. Farrell and Hillyard clearly work very well together and have created a visually wonderful comic for readers to enjoy.
Conclusion
Gotham City Sirens #2 definitely feels like a second issue. We already have the characters and plot line in place, now we need just a little more set up before some of the bigger scenes come into play. It is a great second issue and I definitely need to read the next issue to find out what happens to our heroines.
