The cast and crew of the upcoming The Penguin series unveiled a new trailer and discussed the show.
At Comic-Con San Diego, the cast that came out included Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone) and Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar). Colin Farrell was unable to make it in-person, but did make an appearance via video. Of the cast, show’s executive producers Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark appeared, as well as the showrunner Lauren LeFranc.
Reeves revealed that the show’s inception came when he was scripting The Batman. He felt that the script was getting too long and decided to split it off into a separate mini-series.
According to Farell, the Penguin’s look and the backstory lore drew him to the character.
“The lore of this world held such an attraction for me. [I see him] as someone with “violence and pain etched on [his] face.” Over the course of the series, he said, we’ll look at this life and how broken it is, [someone embodying] this depth of ambition and greed, and the consequences of events from Oz’s childhood.”
Reeves also confirmed that the Penguin will return in The Batman: Part II. He anticipated filming for Part II will start next year, which lines up with Andy Serkis’ estimation.
Amongst the other tidbits, they showed a new preview for the series.
The New ‘Penguin’ Trailer
The trailer sheds some more light on Sofia Falcone. She apparently was a former inmate at Arkham and is now released. Militoni’s take on Sofia seems to have a new twist. Her and Oz are old acquaintances. And while she is small and petite, she has a hair-trigger temper and is ready to get crazy and throw-down. They even to pay homage to Sofia’s comic roots with other characters referring to her as “The Hangman“.
We also get a glimpse of Oz’s dynamic with his mother. The trailer opens with him dancing with her in a modest living room- implying that Oz came from a lower-class background and had to fight his way up. This is emphasized with Oz’s voice-over:
“The world ain’t set up for the honest man to succeed. That should be the American dream right there. Y’know, a beautiful story with a happy ending. But that ain’t the way the world works. America’s a hustle.”
There is also young African American boy named Vic who seems to be some sort of apprentice to Oz. Vic follows him around throughout the entire preview, which culminates to Vic telling Oz that he can help him.
Sounds like there will be a ton of stuff to be looking forward to when the show hits streaming platforms.
The Penguin is an 8-episode mini-series that will run on Max on September 16th.
