The Arkham Asylum television show has been quashed and will not be moving forward.

The show was supposed to be slated for the streaming service Max. It was to serve as a spin-off series set in The Batman universe, similar to the upcoming Penguin show.

Initially, the project started as a Gotham City Police department show all the way back in July 2020. Terrence Winter was to write and executive produce, but soon he left due to creative differencesJoe Barton was then brought in to write, but he also left the project. Then in 2022, The Batman director Matt Reeves indicated that the Gotham PD show evolved into an Arkham Asylum show. In October 2022, Antonio Campos became the showrunner of the series. After James Gunn and Peter Safran became the heads of DC Studios, Gunn hinted that the show may take place in his new DCU continuity, not the same universe as The Batman. This confused fans about the show’s status. Now, we are hearing that the entire thing is done. Warner Bros or DC Studios have not provided any official statements on the reason why the project was cancelled.

While the project seems done, The Batman fans will still have plenty of material from that universe. The Batman Part II will begin filming sometime in early 2025. The Penguin hits Max streaming service September 19th.
