DC Comics have unveiled a short snippet from “I Am The Knight” a documentary being released as part of the Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm 4K Blu-Ray release, that spotlights Kevin Conroy’s Batman.

The clip shows Conroy in an old interview discussing his process as Batman. He related how he feels that Bruce Wayne was considered the “false disguise” and Batman is regarded as the real identity of the character.

From the beginning, I thought that Batman is the real character and Bruce Wayne was the disguise. That’s the way I’ve played this. Bruce Wayne is the alter-ego, that’s the face he puts on for the world. Batman is who he is in his heart.”

If you don’t believe how severely contrasting his Bruce and Batman voices are, look no further than a scene from “On Leather Wings”. As Batman, he’s talking to Alfred in his typical dark, raspy Batman voice, but when Commissioner Gordon makes a call, he immediately switches to a casual, light-hearted Bruce Wayne voice.  It’s really disconcerting to hear Bruce coming from Batman’s mouth. This short scene truly highlights how talented and multi-faceted Conroy was in the role.

I Am The Night” is even the title of the ongoing podcast series from the DC Comics Podcast Network, hosted by Dark Knight News and DC Comics News writers”. The show’s title, and that of this new documentary, were taken/adapted from an iconic episode of Batman: The Animated Series. The “I Am The Night” podcast has been running for close to 100 episodes and is available on Spotify, Google, Play, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, featuring Kevin Conroy’s complete “I Am  The Knight” documentary, hits stores and digital in 4K on September 12, 2023.
