New Nightwing and Titans Action Figures From McFarlane Toys

McFarlane Toys is taking us back to 2016’s “DC Rebirth” era with the release of the mighty Titans, from their latest build-a-figure series.

Surely Dick Grayson’s stock has never been higher at DC. Under the authorship of writer Tom Taylor, Nightwing’s one of the best comics on the shelves (check out our recent reviews for #100 and #101) and just recently Superman himself has approached Dick about reforming and leading the Titans in the absence of the Justice League. Yes, you read that right; for the time being, the Titans will the DCU’s premiere super-team.

So, how did this happen? In a medium where characters aren’t allowed to age, the Titans represent an anomaly. Launching in 1964 the original Teen Titans line-up  included Dick Grayson, when he was still Robin, Wally West as Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Donna Troy as Wonder Girl.

All of the heroes were, as their group name suggests, teenagers. Flash-forward (which, in DC terms is faster than a regular flashforward) to the modern era, and both the Teen Titans and the Titans exist as separate teams, to recognize the fact that Dick has matured into the role of Nightwing, Wally has become The Flash and Donna Troy has shed the “Wonder” association.

In 2016, DC relaunched the universe under the “DC Rebirth” banner. It was a pivotal moment for the Titans, and Dick Grayson in particular, because after having temporarily taken the mantle of Batman, the Titans Hunt storyline saw him return to his Nightwing persona, allowing a nasty case of amnesia that was affecting the team to be lifted. This led to their reformation.

Titans volume three (2016) ran for three years and was written by Dan Abnett, the architect of the Titans Hunt storyline. This is the era that McFarlane Toys have captured with their new action figure line-up.

Given that they were both present at the launch and the closing of this series, Nightwing and Donna Troy are essential additions. Nightwing’s curiously missing his Escrima sticks, but it’s great sculpt nonetheless with that all important mop of jet-black hair and outrageous smirk.

Donna Troy looks like Wonder Woman’s darker, more dangerous younger sister, with her armor, sword, and menacing expression. Also included is Teen Titans and Titans regular Raven. Another “look-how-much-she’s-grown” character, this one comes with alternative pink flame hands.

Rounding off the collection is Arsenal, in at the beginning of the 2016 relaunch, he was also an early member of the original Teen Titans under the moniker Speedy thanks to his swift hands with a bow and arrow, which are included as accessories here. Check out his tattoos!

All the 7″ figures come with collector cards, stands and the body parts which combine to make the fifth Titan to be included in this release. The Build-A-Figure aspect to these McFarlane Toys collections gives you a chance to get your hands on a rarely seen figure, usually due to their size and shape or the limited appearance in comics.

After events in the Dark Nights: Metal and Justice League: No Justice, Beast Boy’s transformative powers were affected and he – for want of a better term – hulked out. Here’s your chance to get your hands on this fantastically fearsome, ogre-like version of Beast Boy.

So, a recreation of an important development in the publication history of the Titans, which has contributed to their – and Nightwing’s – elevated status today. Thank goodness that all four figures are available as a bundle here, at McFarlane Toys.
