James Gunn has announced that The Batman 2 will hit in theaters on October 3, 2025.
As a part of their upcoming DC film slate, DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed The Batman 2 as one of the movies. However, Gunn was quick to note that it is not connected to the rest of the revamped DC film universe. The movie will be under the label “DC Elseworlds”. Any project that’s set outside of the continuity of the main DC film Universe will be called an called “Elseworlds” film. This also includes the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux.
There is relatively little information beyond the announcement. However one presumes that director Matt Reeves and Batman actor Robert Pattinson will return.
Of course, the question remains, what about the other movie and TV projects related to The Batman universe? Colin Farrell’s Penguin television series remains on track to premiere on HBO Max. That series will connect both The Batman movies. This means that it will also be considered an “Elseworlds” production.
What about the rumored film series starring various Batman rogues gallery members that Reeves is supposed to be producing? There was no indication that this is still occurring under Gunn and Safran’s new plans. If it does get made, will that series of movies be a concurrent side project? It would be kind of strange to have parallel series of movies that do not interconnect.
Only time will tell.
