Dave Bautista Confirms He Will Not Be Playing Bane

There has been a lot of sad news in the DC Universe recently, and Dave Bautista confirming that he will not be playing the villain Bane is just another thing to add to the growing list. With director and friend James Gunn now creating a new DC Universe with Peter Safran, we hoped we would eventually see Bautista stepping into DC at some point. However, the actor’s publicist, Danica Smith, said:

James Gunn has spoken to Dave about playing Bane in the last 10 years, but not since James has taken on his role at DC.

The last time we saw Bane on the big screen, he was brought to life by Tom Hardy, in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which director Christopher Nolan said hasn’t been ‘fully appreciated’ yet. Before that, fans saw the villain horribly misportrayed in the 1997 movie, Batman & Robin. So it’s about time to have someone else step in to give us another version of Batman’s nemesis.

Bautista told Insider:

I have had conversations with James about that, but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, he’s starting from scratch and starting younger and fresher and I think you need to do that. I think for the DC Universe to be revived, you need to start from scratch, and I think you need to start with younger actors. You need to start to plan for the next 15 years, and I just don’t think you can do that with me.

I understand that. Also, I have to say that I appreciate that, because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.

It wasn’t just us hoping to eventually see Bautista playing the junked-up villain, he had made Warner Brothers aware that he wanted to be the next actor to play him.

He revealed at JusticeCon:

I’ve made no secret about this. I want to play Bane so bad I went to Warner Bros., had an appointment with them, had an appointment with DC, walked in the door, and said, ‘I want to play Bane.’ I’m not kidding. They were a little like, ‘Woah, we’re not even casting Bane.’ I was like, ‘I don’t care, I’m playing him.’

many things have changed. To name only a few, Henry Cavill will no longer be playing Superman, Wonder Woman 3 has been put on hold, Batgirl was canceled just as it finished, and currently, several hit TV shows are ending all at once. Fingers crossed that they actually give us some good news soon.

Gunn tweeted in November:

All our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects.

What are your thoughts about everything happening with DC right now? Are you also disappointed not to have Dave Bautista play Bane one day? Tell us about it in the comments.
