Not much is known about Joker 2 just yet, but we know that Lady Gaga will be stepping in as that universe’s Harley Quinn. A fan has reached out to director James Gunn to ask what his thoughts on this are, as Gaga confirmed the news recently with a tweet of a short animation of herself and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker dancing together. Although fans expected a new Harley to be introduced into the movie, that’s about all we currently know.
Margot Robbie has been playing Quinn since 2016 when she was cast in Suicide Squad. She has since reprised the role in 2020 for Birds of Prey and in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in 2021. Robbie’s version of the character is amazing and it’s hard to picture anyone else stepping in, let alone doing it nearly as brilliantly. So, Gaga has some really high expectations to meet already.
A fan asked Gunn if he had any thoughts on the Lady Gaga casting of Harley Quinn in Joker 2. The writer/director answered with a lovely story on Instagram, saying:
I’m really interested to see what Todd Phillips cooks up. I met Lady Gaga once and she was really nice, so I’m always rooting for nice people to do well
News that Joker: Folie a Deux may be a musical spread earlier this year, around the same time that it was first announced that Lady Gaga would be stepping in to play Harley. Joker actress Zazie Beetz, who has recently said that she will be returning for Joker 2, has said:
I actually think it makes wonderful sense. I wasn’t really surprised by that Todd has always had a creative approach to the character. I love musicals, and I think of them as the characters are feeling and experiencing so much that they can only sing and dance about it, whether in sorrow or in joy.
I can actually see that within myself as well, because singing and dancing is quite a cathartic experience for me. I was going through a really, really difficult time at one point in my life, and I just started dancing and crying by myself.
That was an expression that matched where I was at that moment, so I can see Arthur, who’s feeling and experiencing so much, dancing and singing about it. He’s the Joker, so I think it makes sense to me.
Joker: Folie a Deux is set to release on October 4th, 2024, with Phoenix returning as Joker. The title of the movie, Folie a Deux, which is a French phrase meaning “folly of two” or “madness of two”, is the only hint we have at guessing what the plot could be about.
