It’s been a long while since I had a chance to read new antics of the Super Sons. With many changes to the timeline, John Kent is now Superman, but Damian Wayne remains Robin. Together they will always be the sons of DC’s greatest heroes, and they have returned in Superman & Robin #1 for true antics.
The plot’s simple, and honestly, who could hate that? With the complexity of all the things John Kent’s been through of late, a harmless jaunt across the world with a dear friend is always fun, and very welcome. We get real heartfelt character development across the issue, with Superman feeling the vulnerability of the changing times and the struggles he feels given these changes.
With this strong vision of Superman, we get a very deep character contrast with Damian. We’re reminded of a major difference in tone between the two characters, which is made all the more disconcerting the longer you read it. The dynamic between the two heroes feels very different from what it once was.
This issue delivers both action and character intrigue. We’re given moments of immense punchy drama with strange beings, and then hordes of enemies keep us gripped.
Conclusion
The Superman & Robin Special is a bundle of fun that gives us a really welcome look at beloved characters side by side once again. As with any great DC one-shot, you can expect a thrill ride with our heroes at the center. This is true, but we’re rewarded as readers for knowing the current continuity.
Picking up this issue will guarantee an action-packed adventure for any reader.
