‘The Batman’ Trailer Focuses on Bat and Cat

A new trailer for The Batman highlights more for the Riddler’s plot, as well as Batman’s dynamic with Catwoman.

The trailer begins by introducing Jayme Lawson’s character. Bella Reál is a mayoral candidate for Gotham who, in the preview, chastises Bruce for not living up to his family’s reputation as he’s not doing no philanthropic work for the city. Of course, Bruce smirks to himself knowing that he’s done a ton for Gotham as Batman.

Other shots from the trailer include an extended car chase scene with the Penguin, as seen in the previous trailers, Batman noticing all of Selina Kyle’s cats, and also hints at a heated argument between Alfred and Bruce.

It appears that Batman and Catwoman have both an antagonistic relationship, as well as a friendly one. Selina also declares that

If we don’t stand up, no one will… The Bat and the Cat, it’s got a nice ring.

Riddle Me This: Who is ‘The Batman’?

The trailer also sheds more light on the Riddler’s plans for Gotham City. He appears to be targeting specifically the Wayne family. This may all be an effort to show the world what Gotham truly is.

I’m just here to unmask the truth about this cesspool we call a city.

While that line seems to hint at some of the Riddler’s motivation, the quick teases may indicate the overall plan. There’s the implication again that the Riddler has uncovered Batman’s secret identity. Other teases include flashes of the city-scape exploding at the water front, the streets being flooded, and Batman leading a crowd of people through waist-deep water with only a flare. These sequences may hint at the specific comic book inspiration for the film.

The Batman leads people out of the flood zone.

The Riddler’s plot in The Batman may be loosely based on the Zero Year story line, where the Riddler  manipulated the city’s power grid to plunge the city into darkness, while also flooding the streets with water and plant life, creating a post-apocalyptic Gotham cityscape.

If this proves to be true, then Matt Reeves chose an excellent story arc as the source material.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4th, 2022. It will be released on HBO Max on April 19, 2022.
