Another ‘The Batman’ Spinoff Series with The Penguin in Development

The Batman is still months away from release, but that’s not stopping Warner Bros. from continuing the expansion of that world.

Warner Bros. seems to be building out DCEU’s Earth-2 the way many of us had hoped the DCEU would have been treated years ago. This latest expansion also spins out of The Batman and will focus on The Penguin (Colin Farrell). The show, which is heading to HBO Max, is in early development with Farrell in talks to reprise his role; though no deal was in place at the time of writing. The series will reportedly follow Oswald Cobblepot’s rise to power in Gotham’s underworld. Agents of Shield and Impulse alum Lauren LeFranc is attached to write the script and Matt Reeves will executive produce.

Assuming that the series moves forward, it’ll mark the second time The Penguin’s story was explored on live-action TV. While Burgess Meredith portrayed a campy version of the character in the 1960s Batman series, there wasn’t much depth to the villain’s story. It was in Gotham, where Robin Lord Taylor portrayed the criminal mastermind. The role was also previously played by Danny DeVito in Batman Returns.

This potential Penguin series follows the first announced The Batman spinoff, one that surrounds the Gotham City Police Department. Warner Bros. is on the path to make everything DC part of the same DCEU Multiverse, but it appears that Earth-2 is getting some special treatment. It’s a good sign that the studio is behind both The Batman and the film’s director, Matt Reeves.

Are you excited about the latest addition to Earth-2? Or do you feel it’s too soon for Warner Bros. to be developing spinoffs based on a movie that hasn’t been released yet? Let us know in the comments below!
