After Supernatural actor Jensen Ackles voiced anti-hero Jason Todd, AKA Red Hood, in the 2010 animated film Under The Red Hood, . All fans have wanted since then was for him to become Batman, even if it is just his voice. It seems that, while Ackles finally gets to say “I’m Batman” and mean it, his co-worker and voice of the Joker, Troy Baker, also agrees with this casting choice.
Although Baker has also voiced the Caped Crusader in his career (Lego DC Comics movies, Batman: The Telltale Series, and Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) he has nothing but praise for Ackles’ performance in Batman: The Long Halloween Parts One and Two. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, he had this to say about his co-star:
Jensen, I’ve got to give him props, and I’ve said this with every other interview I’ve done today, I really, really commend his performance in this. This is not just a gig for him. He walked in and he met this with the full arsenal of his experience, talent and passion, and it’s a real big challenge. Stepping into the cowl, in the titular role of something as established as Batman is a huge challenge, but it’s easier to be Batman than it is to be Bruce. And a lot of people don’t understand that, and they just go, ‘I just gotta make sure I sound low and menacing to do Batman.’ No, that’s not it. You also have to be Bruce and be acceptable and believable, and not just someone putting on a voice. [Jensen’s] Bruce helped me believe his Batman in such a unique way.
As Baker said, stepping in to play Batsy is a challenge because the actor is playing one character that works like two. Putting on the different voices for Bruce Wayne and Batman probably isn’t nearly as easy as actors make it seem, so getting such high praise from someone who’s taken on that challenge more than once, is amazing. We hope to see these two brilliant actors work on more projects together in the future.
