Empire has exclusively revealed what John Cena will look like in Peacemaker, and, to be honest, it’s not a huge surprise. As you can see in the attached image, Cena’s wearing an outfit very similar to his costume in The Suicide Squad.
However, it’s not necessarily our first look at the titular character of the HBO Max series Peacemaker that’s interesting. It’s really coming to terms with this show featuring an unlikeable/not-good person that we’re supposed to root for. Heck, that’s the entire concept of The Suicide Squad, just on a grander scale. James Gunn, who penned the entire series during the pandemic (and will be directing five of its episodes), didn’t hold back on who Peacemaker is:
Peacemaker’s a piece of shit. He’s not a good guy. And he wears the goofiest costume you’ve ever seen in your life.
What’s pretty exciting, especially seeing how successful Marvel and Disney+ have been with deeper looks at their MCU characters, is getting to know Peacemaker on a deeper level. Seeing Cena’s take on the character in trailers for The Suicide Squad has instantly made Peacemaker one of my favorites from this iteration of the team. The professional wrestler’s acting career has really taken a shine with me in the last few years; Cena has some excellent comedic timing. Cena also happens to agree with Gunn about his character:
This guy is a loud, obnoxious, bro-ey douchebag. That sucks. But why? At what point did he become such a douchebag and what does that mean? There’s a lot to dive into there.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2022 for that deep dive. In the meantime, we’ll be able to see John Cena’s Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad on August 6th, 2021, in both theaters and HBO Max.
