Jeffrey Dean Morgan and His DC Future

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has confirmed that he would love to return to the DC Universe. The actor, who has worked in a number of comic related projects, previously played Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in the opening scene, where Bruce Wayne’s parents are murdered. As has been well-established, this sets up Bruce to become Batman. Despite this, because of the upcoming The Flash film starring Ezra Miller, there are possibilities for Morgan’s character to be revived via alternate timelines.

In the main DC canon, Bruce Wayne’s parents’ murder is what inspired him to become Batman and fight crime in Gotham City. However, alternate timelines and histories are in abundance in the DC Universe. The Flash is able to travel between these timelines, which created the comic arc known as Flashpoint. In Flashpoint, the confrontation with the robber leaves a young Bruce Wayne dead rather than his parents. This leads Martha and Thomas Wayne to react in completely different manners. Martha becomes that timeline’s Joker and Thomas becomes Batman.

With The Flash now in production and the Flashpoint arc playing a role in the film, fans have started to petition for Morgan to be able to play the alternate Batman. Morgan is interested in the role, although he says it better happen soon:

At the top of my list has always been Batman, that’s always been my favorite superhero. Talking about Flashpoint has been very fun. I get asked about it a lot. I love the story of Flashpoint Batman. Who knows? … I suppose I probably have like another two, three-year window, and then I’m gonna be too old. There’s no way.

Sadly, Batman’s is not the only story in Flashpoint, so The Flash film might not even focus on this arc when discussing the changed history. There are lots of heroes in the DC Universe and plenty that have significant changes to their stories in Flashpoint.  As the actor said about himself,

So, look, I’m available. Everybody knows I’m available. I say I’m available, I’ve been saying it for five years. We’ll see what happens. There’s so many superheroes.

We shall just have to wait and see if Morgan will return to Thomas Wayne.

The Flash will be released in theaters November 4, 2022
