Michael Keaton and his representatives have officially announced that the actor will return as the Batman, in upcoming film The Flash.

Michael Keaton Returns

In June 2020, news broke that Keaton was in talks to play Batman again. However, it initially looked as if those reports were premature. In March 2021, Keaton threw some cold water on the excitement by making statements that indicate he may not do the film. Keaton previously voiced concerns over COVID safety, as well as being too busy to even look at The Flash treatment at the time.

Fortunately, it appears that the legendary Batman ’89 actor has put those fears to bed with this official announcement. Now the question remains: in what capacity will Keaton appear in the film?

Admittedly, the thought of a 69 year old man strapping on a rubber Bat-suit isn’t as appealing as some fans might hope, it may be possible that Keaton will just play a retired Bruce Wayne who mentors the younger heroes, a-la Batman Beyond.

Long-time Bat-fans will be familiar with Keaton’s haunting and neurotic take on the character from Tim Burton’s 1989’s Batman. He last portrayed the Dark Knight in 1992’s Batman Returns. After that, Keaton  had a period of taking on smaller roles. Eventually, he had a bit of a career revival with 2014’s Birdman, where he played a disturbed former superhero actor, trying to take on “serious” roles. Now it’s all come full circle, as Keaton returns to the role that that made him a household name.

The Flash is currently slated for a November. 4, 2022. release date.
