Zack Snyder Explains Why ‘Justice League’ Won’t Be Released Episodically

We are officially now mere days away from the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max. What was once just a fan dream is soon to become a reality. When the runtime was revealed to be four hours, rumors quickly swirled that the film would be released episodically, because – let’s be real – even for the most die hard fans, that’s a long movie. With the film being released on a streaming service, they do have the flexibility to break it up like that.

In a recent interview with IGN at Fan Fest, Snyder explained how the episodic approach “got complicated.” If the film was released episodically, HBO Max, much like Disney+, would probably have chosen to release episodes weekly, rather than the Netflix model of releasing an entire season at once. Snyder explained that viewers “would’ve been mad if they had to wait weeks.”

Recently, it was revealed that Snyder is not getting paid for the #SnyderCut, to keep his negotiating powers. It’s possible that this was a decision he flexed on the studio/HBO Max with, given he’s not receiving a paycheck.

6 Chapters of Justice

While the full four hour film will be released at once, fans hoping for a break will be relieve that it is broken up into six chapters. They are:

  1. Don’t Count On It, Batman
  2. The Age of Heroes
  3. Beloved Mother, Beloved Son
  4. Change Machine
  5. All the King’s Horses
  6. Something Darker

Deborah Snyder, Zack’s wife and producer on the film, encourages fans to take a break if they need it. Instead of powering through all four hours at once.

I’ll give you a tip about viewing it. I know a lot of fans are going to want to watch it straight through, but it also has parts. What HBO Max is able to do is, there’s going to be a timeline on the bottom, where you see the timeline of the thing, there’re going to be little indentations, because each part has a title, and it’s kind of thematic.

I know I’m certainly relieved to hear how simple it will be to track breaks in the movie. Whether it’s breaking it up into two, two-hour sessions or just simply know when to take a bathroom break. It seems like it will be pretty clear when one chapter ends, and the next begins.

Are you going to ignore Deborah Snyder’s words and go for a four-hour viewing? Or will you be breaking up your #SnyderCut? Let us know!

Zack Snyder’s Justice League hits HBO Max on March 18th, as well as worldwide on various platforms according to country.
